Understanding GST in India

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a value-added tax levied on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption. It was introduced in India on July 1, 2017, replacing a complex web of indirect taxes like VAT, excise duty, and service tax.

Types of GST

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on an intra-state sale (e.g., a transaction happening within Maharashtra).
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on an intra-state sale. Usually, CGST and SGST are equal halves of the total GST rate.
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the Central Government for inter-state sales (e.g., a transaction between Maharashtra and Gujarat).

How to Calculate GST Manually

Adding GST

If you have a base price of ₹1,000 and the GST rate is 18%:

  • GST = (1000 × 18) / 100 = ₹180
  • Total = 1000 + 180 = ₹1,180

Removing GST

If the total price is ₹1,180 and it includes 18% GST:

  • Base = 1180 / (1 + (18/100))
  • Base = 1180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000
  • GST = 1180 - 1000 = ₹180

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax used in India on the supply of goods and services. It is a comprehensive, multistage, destination-based tax that has replaced many indirect taxes in India.

What are the different GST slabs in India?

The primary GST slabs in India are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. There are also special rates of 0.25% on rough precious and semi-precious stones and 3% on gold. Essential items are often exempt (0%).

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are levied on intra-state sales (within the same state). The total GST is divided equally between the Center and the State. IGST (Integrated GST) is levied on inter-state sales (between two states) and is collected entirely by the Central Government.

How do I calculate GST?

To add GST: GST Amount = (Original Cost × GST Rate) / 100. Net Price = Original Cost + GST Amount. To remove GST (find base price): Base Price = Original Cost / (1 + (GST Rate / 100)). GST Amount = Original Cost - Base Price.
