Section 80C is the best-known deduction in the Indian income-tax system. It allows up to ₹1.5 lakh of eligible investments and expenses to be deducted from taxable income — but only if you choose the old tax regime.
Since the new tax regime became the default, many taxpayers assume 80C is dead. It is not dead; it is optional. The right question is whether the old regime's deductions, including 80C, save more tax than the new regime's lower slabs. This guide works through that decision.
What is Section 80C?
Section 80C of the Income-tax Act allows a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh from gross total income for specified investments and expenses. The limit is an aggregate ceiling, not ₹1.5 lakh per item. If you invest ₹1 lakh in PPF and pay ₹1 lakh of life insurance premium, only ₹1.5 lakh is deductible.
The deduction reduces taxable income; it is not a tax rebate. If you are in the 30% slab, ₹1.5 lakh of deduction can reduce tax by up to about ₹46,800 before surcharge and cess, depending on your income and regime.
Eligible investments and expenses
Common Section 80C items
| Item | Lock-in / condition | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Employee Provident Fund (EPF) | Until retirement/withdrawal | Employee contribution counts. |
| Public Provident Fund (PPF) | 15 years | EEE status; partial withdrawal rules apply. |
| Equity Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS) | 3 years | Market-linked; equity taxation applies. |
| Life insurance premium | Policy term | Premium must be within the sum-assured limits. |
| Home loan principal repayment | Loan term | Interest is claimed separately under Section 24(b). |
| Tuition fees | School/college | Tuition only, not donation or transport. |
| National Savings Certificate (NSC) | 5 years | Interest is taxable on accrual. |
| 5-year tax-saving FD | 5 years | Interest is taxable. |
| Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana | Until maturity | For a girl child; EEE status. |
| Stamp duty and registration | Home purchase | One-time claim in the year of purchase. |
The list is broad, but not every product is suitable for every investor. A 15-year PPF lock-in is very different from a 3-year ELSS lock-in, even though both qualify for the same deduction.
Old regime vs new regime
The new tax regime is the default. It offers lower slab rates and a standard deduction of ₹75,000 for salaried taxpayers, but it does not allow most deductions, including 80C. The old regime has higher slab rates but allows 80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest and other deductions.
How the choice works in practice
| Situation | Old regime may be better if | New regime may be better if |
|---|---|---|
| Salaried, few deductions | You have large 80C, 80D and HRA claims | Your deductions are small |
| Home loan borrower | Interest and principal deductions are large | The loan is small or you claim no deductions |
| High earner with EPF and insurance | Total deductions exceed the break-even | Your taxable income is high but deductions are limited |
| Freelancer | You have eligible investments and expenses | You prefer simplicity and lower slabs |
The break-even depends on your income, deductions and the tax rates in each regime. Use an income tax calculator to compare the actual liability rather than relying on a rule of thumb.
