BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Example: 65 kg at 170 cm → 65 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 22.5, which falls in the Normal range of 18.5–24.9.
WHO international cut-offs: below 18.5 Underweight, 18.5–24.9 Normal, 25–29.9 Overweight, 30–34.9 Obese Class I, 35–39.9 Class II, and 40+ Class III. Note that South-Asian guidance often treats 23+ as overweight — consider yourself borderline earlier if your doctor advises it.
Not always — BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so athletes and bodybuilders can read as Overweight while being very fit. Pair BMI with waist circumference (under ~90 cm for Indian men, ~80 cm for women) or body-fat percentage for the full picture.
This calculator shows the kilograms to your nearest healthy boundary (18.5 if under, 24.9 if over). Aim for gradual change — roughly 0.5 kg per week — through diet, strength training and sleep rather than crash diets.
Adult cut-offs don't apply directly: children use age-and-gender BMI percentiles, and in seniors slightly higher BMIs can be protective. Pregnant women should track gestational weight-gain charts instead of BMI.
Insurers use BMI bands in underwriting — obesity loadings can raise term and health premiums materially. Lenders don't use BMI, but the health discipline behind a good BMI usually shows up in financial discipline too.
