Muscle vs fat, ideal weight, belly fat and estimate accuracy.
The BMI formula and WHO cut-offs are identical for both sexes. What differs is interpretation: at the same BMI, men typically carry less body fat than women, which is why this page adds a male-specific body-fat estimate and ideal-weight figure. Women can use the standard BMI calculator.
Probably not — BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so muscular men often land in Overweight while being metabolically fit. Check your waist (under ~90 cm for Indian men) and body-fat percentage: if fat is under ~20% with a trim waist, your BMI is muscle, not risk.
Rough ACE bands: essential fat 2–5%, athletic 6–13%, fit 14–17%, average 18–24%, obese 25%+. Most health risk sits with visceral belly fat, so pair the percentage with a tape measure around your navel.
This page uses the Devine formula for men (50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet). It estimates a healthy reference weight, not a mandate — frame size, muscle and age shift it several kilos either way.
South Asians tend to store visceral fat at lower BMIs, raising diabetes and heart risk even in the 'normal' BMI band. A growing waistline with a normal BMI still deserves attention — diet, strength training and sleep move it fastest.
It uses the Deurenberg equation (BMI + age based) — a screening estimate within a few percentage points for typical builds, but unreliable for very muscular or very lean men. Calipers, bioimpedance scales or a DEXA scan measure it properly.
